Here’s a review of the Korg microSTATION 61-Key synthesizer workstation.
We recommend these great replacements:
This compact 61-mini-key synth comes with a 16-track sequencer that is ready to loop beats and build songs. You get 480 Korg sounds and it weighs less than 6 pounds.
- PROS: Affordable Workstation, comes with synth & sequencer
- CONS: Mini keys, small screen, no speakers
Here are the main features of the Korg microSTATION:
- 61 mini-keys
- Compact, portable keyboard
- 4480 ready-to-play Programs plus 256 Combinations
- Audition Riffs lets you preview each sound
- 120-voice polyphony
- 16-track on-board sequencer
- Dual arpeggiators help you create beats fast
- SD/SDHC card slot for storing sounds and songs
- USB MIDI makes it easy to connect to a computer
- Stand-alone/plug-in microSTATION Editor software for detailed sound editing
Almost all the samples are excellent, and if anything doesn’t sound quite right to your ears, you can easily fix it by careful programming & the right use of FX.
The ability to program velocity cross switching between sounds on each key adds even more versatility. The joystick and four assignable knobs provides you better control over the sounds.
The grid sequencing is useful for those who love to create Electronic Dance Music (EDM). The combis and program are too good (for the price).
When using this board, remember to save the sequencer data to an external SD card else you risk losing it, in case you turn-off the keyboard or if there’s a power failure when you’re in the midst of composing the tracks.
Some users have raised a concern about the shorter keys on this board, but it’s not a big deal as such. Besides, this one has great set of sounds, especially suited for dance music.
If you’re looking for a function workstation without having to spend a couple of grands (at least) then this is definitely a very good option. In terms of value, there’s hardly anything that matches this product. The keys may look smaller at first, but spend some time playing it and you’ll get used to it in no time.
