So is there really any difference between an electric and acoustic guitar strap?
Not really!
A guitar strap can be tied to any kind of guitar (acoustic or electric), as long as your guitar has provisions to atach a strap.
If your guitar doesn’t come with strap locks, you have to purchase them separately, and install them separately.
Various Ways to Attach a Guitar Strap
The way you proceed to attach a strap will depend on a few factors:
- Does the guitar already have any strap buttons on it?
- Do you mind altering the guitar?
- Are you comfortable using basic tools?
When the guitar only has a Strap Button on the Butt of the Guitar
All steel string acoustic guitars have a strap button on the butt of the guitar. So all you need to do is to attach the guitar strap to the other end of the guitar. That depends on if you’re going to use a strap that you already have or if you’ll be buying a new strap.
If you don’t want to alter the guitar but want to use an existing strap, you have a few choices – You can buy a hanger that goes on the headstock. You can also tie a shoelace to the end of your strap and the headstock. Another option is to get an old-fashioned acoustic guitar strap. It will have a loop that attaches to the headstock of the guitar. You don’t have to alter your guitar and it’s a kind of cool retro look.

How to Attach a Strap to a Guitar Without Knobs or Buttons?
So how to attach a strap onto a guitar that has no knobs or buttons for straps?
One method is to use a butt end mounted button where you tie the other end of the strap to the guitar head just above the nut. You get a little thing that wraps around the headstock of the guitar (behind the nut). It has a little strap button thing on it to which you can connect your strap.
The other method uses two buttons, one mounted at the butt end, the other on the neck just above the point where it mounts to the body.
