Electric guitars amplify the sound generated by the guitar strings electronically. Instead of the sound box of an acoustic guitar, an electric guitar has pick-ups and other electronic components. The pick up from an electric guitar picks up the sound waves generated by the strings and converts them into their corresponding minute electrical signals.
It basically means, the better the quality of the pickups, the better is the quality of the sound produced. So if you have been using an electric guitar for some time now, you may upgrade the pickups (aka pups) to better quality ones, if you want a better sound from the guitar.
After playing for a couple of years, your ears become better at recognizing what sounds good and what sounds bad. So the guitar you bough initially may sound dull and uninspiring to you after some time.
So if you don’t have the budget right now to buy a new guitar, you may upgrade the pickups.
There are different types of pickups, commonly used ones are: Magnetic pickups, Piezo electric pickups, Condenser pick ups.
Other components that are found on guitars are the volume control knob (which enables the guitarist to control the volume of the guitar sound) and tone control knobs (which enables the playing guitarist to determine the sound tonality). These knobs are quite useful while performing, as you can easily change things while playing, similar to the buttons/knobs that you have on synth keyboards.
