Yamaha FG830 Acoustic Guitar: Review
Part of Yamaha’s long-running Folk Guitar “FG” series, the FG830’s dreadnought shape fits comfortably against the body, has a big, bold acoustic tone, and attractive finish, and is comfortable to play.
Although Yamaha projects it as a ‘folk guitar’, the FG-830 can actually be used for just about any style or genre of music.
Definitely recommended to any beginner guitarist!
This particular guitar doesn’t come with any built-in electronics, so if you want to go that way, it would probably be best to get a magnetic pickup. But you may probably not need it, as the sonic quality of this guitar will be enough to make you heard wherever you play.
The Tone / Sound
If you go to a guitar store and try out other brands as well, in comparison, you might feel that the Yamaha FG830 lacks a bit in the mids, even though the highs are good and clear. But then it’s not fair to expect it to sound as good as the highly priced exotic wood guitars (which will easily cost a few hundred dollars more).
This is an entry-level guitar but still has a reasonable tone to it. It has Yamaha’s typical nice even tone – solid and balanced. Being a dreadnought, it produces a full, boomy sound.
If you just want a beginner guitar to help you learn to play, something that’s perfect to strum at the campfire, then this is the one!
Construction
Even though the guitar is made in China (most of the guitars in this price-range are made there), the quality standards are extremely high. Yamaha is a premier musical instrument manufacturer and you can expect quality materials and construction. The guitar uses good quality woods; the action and intonation on this guitar is also reasonably good, if not excellent.
Top: Solid Sitka Spruce. Back & Sides: Laminate Nato. Bracing: Scalloped. Bridge: Rosewood. Saddle: Urea (plastic). Nut: Urea (plastic).
You can make a few changes to the guitar to make it sound better. For example, many put a bone saddle (over which the strings bend before going into the body) and experience a much better sound. However, you need to remember that solid wood guitars sound better compared to any laminate out there. So this is not going to become a Martin or a Taylor, but then for this price, this is really the best.
Solid spruce Top Bracing
New scalloped bracing makes the FG830 even fatter and louder, gives better punch and projection. This gives the solid spruce top an expressive dynamic range for punchy chords, sweet-sounding leads, and lively riffing.
High Quality strings
Unlike most other guitars in this range, this one stays in tune for a much longer period, so you really don’t have to tinker with the strings a lot.
Feel free to use better quality strings, if you want a better sound, or you can choose to wear it out before upgrading to new set of strings.
Electronics
This guitar has no built-in electronics. If you want to set one up. it’s best to get a magnetic pickup. However, you would most likely not need it, as this guitar is loud enough to be heard.

Watch: Yamaha 800 Series (FG830, FG800, FS800) acoustic guitars compared.
This can vary from person to person. If you have short hands, maybe you could find this a bit oversized. However, considering the neck width, string gauge & height, and overall set up, it does come across as an easy-to-play guitar.
The action is not too high for most, but if you’re a beginner you can get it adjusted. There are several players who have complained of NO Buzz even after a year of using this guitar.
Value for Money
This is one of the best beginner guitars out there for the price. It also comes with a bundled package that gives you everything that you need to start playing guitar.
The guitar has good looks and sounds, and the build quality is also very good (the Yamaha name and logo look cool too).

I have owned several Yamaha guitars, from basic ones to high end ones, and they are the best brand to offer the best “bang for the buck”. The volume and tone of the FG-800 will definitely exceed your expectations when you look at the price.
This is one of the better guitar out there for a beginner guitar player, just hands down the best entry level model of any brand.

Yamaha FG800 in India…
This is a nice solid-top guitar with authentic sounds. You have to try it out.
In India, this guitar is priced around 20,000. You can buy hem online or at popular music retailers.
I needed brighter sounding acoustic guitar that was not very expensive. This guitar is perfect for my home studio. I would definitely recommend this to a friend.

Although this one looks very simple, it had the low to mid range volume that I was looking for and the tone is fantastic. After fine tuning it, it had a slight buzz on the D string. I put on some Elixer Polyweb 12s and there was no more buzz. Really like the tuners, too. The Elixir strings really brought out the tone, and as you have mentioned, the volume is still there without “banging” it out. Except for the Plain Jane looks, its excellent in all aspects.
