Yamaha FG700S Acoustic Guitar Review: A great entry-level 6-string acoustic guitar, that is not only beautiful but also offers the best value for money for an acoustic.
- Pros – Great Sound & Looks, High quality Workmanship, Pretty looking, Included strings are good
- Cons – High action at the higher frets, bit over-sized body for smaller people
If you go to a guitar store and try out other brands as well, in comparison, you might feel that the Yamaha FG700S lacks a bit in the mids, even though the highs are good and clear. But then it’s not fair to expect it to sound as good as the highly priced exotic wood guitars.
A quick look at the prices will make you realize that actually there is no comparison, as the other brands will easily cost a few hundred dollars more.
If you just want a beginner guitar to help you learn to play, something that’s perfect to strum at the campfire, then this is the one!
About the Brand
This is from Yamaha, which is indeed a premier musical instrument manufacturer. It means you can expect quality materials and construction.
Also, the action and intonation on a guitar from a reputed brand is reasonably good, if not excellent.
It uses good quality woods – Sitka spruce top and mahogany back and sides, rosewood fingerboard, for high quality tonal quality. The die-cast tuners, rust-resistant strings, make for a great finish.
And even though it’s made in China (most of the guitars in this price-range are made there), the quality standards are extremely high.
So, a great product and a few changes can definitely make it sound better. For example, many put a bone saddle (over which the strings bend before going into the body) and experience a much better sound.
However, you need to remember that solid wood guitars sound better compared to any laminate out there. So this is not going to become a Martin or a Taylor, but then for this price, this is really the best.
High Quality strings
Unlike most other guitars in this range, this one stays in tune for a much longer period, so you really don’t have to tinker with the strings a lot.
Feel free to use better quality strings, if you want a better sound. The FG700S comes with D’Addario strings which are high quality strings so you really don’t have to change it right away, you can choose to wear it out before upgrading to new set of strings.
This can vary from person to person. If you have short hands, maybe you could find this a bit over-sized. However, considering the neck width, string gauge & height, and the overall set up, it does come across an easy to play guitar.
The action is not too high for most, but if you’re a beginner you can get it adjusted. There are several players who have complained of NO Buzz even after a year of using this guitar.
Value for Money
This is one of the best beginner guitar out there. It also comes with a bundled package that gives you everything that you need to start playing guitar, except the tutorial books/lessons.
The only reason to give it full marks is that for the price, it just comes across an excellent guitar. If your friend has an expensive guitar (maybe a Taylor), this comes close enough but then if you look at the price, you’ll definitely feel satisfied with this purchase.
And its not that only the sounds are good, the looks and the build quality is very good as well, including the Yamaha name and logo, which looks cool too.
