Created particularly to create spooky noises, the Apprehension Engine is a weird looking music instrument built to create horror soundtracks
Movie composer Mark Korven (The Cube and The Witch) wanted his luthier friend (guitar maker) Tony Duggan-Smith to come up with a musical instrument that would make terrifying sounds. And the “Apprehension Engine” as born.
From YouTube description:
A horror movie composer and a guitar maker join forces to create a disturbing musical instrument. Movie composer Mark Korven wanted to create spooky noises in a more acoustic and original way – but the right instrument didn’t exist. His friend, guitar maker Tony Duggan-Smith, went deep into his workshop and assembled what has to be the spookiest instrument on Earth.
Does the spooky sounds remind you of the movie ‘The Witch’? Well, that’s because this instrument was used to make the soundtrack for The Witch (it was commissioned for that movie).
There’s even a guitar mic under the strings. The black thing he uses at about 3min produces a sound that could fit into Blade Runner very well. Indeed incredible, and produces so many spooky sounds.
I hope more horror film makers using this awesome instrument. And yes, you can even use it on a Halloween night to creep out people.
