Guitar players/users have their own preferences for keep their guitars on the guitar stand or hang it on the wall using a guitar hanger. Whether you use a Guitar Stand or Guitar Hanger (Mount) depends on several things — depends on the guitar, the owner, and reason for owning the guitar, safety, etc.
- Do you own a really expensive guitar, something that was won at a guitar playing competition? Then, put it right there high on the wall, with a display case surrounding it, and let the world see it. I’m sure you’ll have another guitar that you’ll use for practicing.
- Do you own an inexpensive guitar, that you use for practicing all the time? Put it on the stand so that its more accessible.
Definitely, a guitar looks a bit more imposing on the wall, than on the stands. Here are some more pros & cons of each.
Does a Guitar Hanger Damage the Neck of the Guitar?
Most feel that hanging the guitar makes it more prone to damage. Hangers may look better (and are usually cheaper) but a guitar wall mount could damage the neck of your guitar, and probably also the wall. That is why, most are comfortable using a stand (especially for their expensive guitars), you just tuck the guitar away in a corner on a stand.
But then, almost every guitar store in the world displays their collection of guitars on hangers, so I don’t think it damages the neck. In fact, many believe that wall hangers are great because the weight of the guitar body keeps the neck really straight, and that helps to get the intonation perfect.
Guitar Stands Are Practical to Use
Though the guitar may look good on a guitar hanger on the wall, you may not be able to find a convenient spot. Also, its quite impractical & inconvenient, to hang your guitar on the wall and remove from it, especially if you play a lot and want to access the guitar most of the time.
Stands, on the other hand, stay on the floor, are more practical, and more portable.

Impact on Guitar Finish & Tuning
How does a Guitar Stand or Mount impact the Guitar Finish & its Tuning.
If you’ve read the other articles on this site, you would know the importance of using a stand (or even a mount). But won’t it impact the finish of the guitar? Is it something to worry about, especially if you have an expensive instrument?
Not at all!
These stands have rubber felts/coating that makes sure the instrument is protected by any sort of markings. so you can be rest assured that the finish of your guitar will stay intact.
Also, if you’re using a mount, the support arms holds the guitar tightly and securely so there’s no chance of the guitar falling down on the floor. Of course you have to make sure that you have setup the mount correctly on the wall.
Same applies for the guitar tuning as well. We have not heard anybody complaining, or experienced it ourselves that placing the guitar on a wall mount impacts the tuning of the guitar.
However, like any other guitar, you need to make sure that you clean your guitar on a regular basis.
If you have a guitar, you’ll need to take proper care and maintenance of it, to get rid of dirt and oil that settles on the guitar if you play for long. Regular cleaning prevents the guitar from looking dull.
The easiest way to do that is by wiping the guitar using a cotton cloth. Some players also use paper towels, but you need to be careful there are it may scratch the finish of the guitar, particularly if the finish is shellac or lacquer.
Even otherwise, its a good idea to use one of the several commercial guitar polishes and cleaners that are available on the market. In case your guitar is very old, has damages to the finish, you may require the help of a guitar repair professional to make it look like a new one.
So there’s really no need to worry about a Guitar Stand or Mount impacting the finish of the Guitar or its tuning.
More Scenarios
Guitar Stands certainly don’t damage guitars, but can be impractical if you own several guitars, some of which don’t get played very often, in which case a hanger is more suitable (you do get multi-guitar stands but that occupies more space on the floor ).
Besides, when you keep your guitars on stands, guests just pick up the guitars themselves and start playing (much to the owners dislike), especially kids. Most are happy to share their guitars provided they ask, which they do when the guitar is placed on the hanger.
There are some, who have a room to themselves, who don’t mind using hangers. There are some who use a double stand for their guitar and bass, and everything else goes in the case when not in use.
