Music Recording Equipment that you need to create and mix your own music.
We have already discussed in a few other articles why home studios are becoming so popular.
It’s really easy to get started in music production using basic home studio equipment, and the best part is that you can always start with basic stuff and add on more gear as and when required.
Checkout a Few Big Studios
In case you also intend to setup one, it could be worth your while to checkout some professional studios, before you think about what you need to buy.
The equipment used in professional studios doesn’t differ very much from what is found in most home studios, but you can get an idea of what you need to get started with. Of course you don’t need them all to begin with.
Besides, you get a good idea of how the acoustics are taken care of in the studio, so that you can keep that in mind when designing your own.
Software Part
Most users are happy with the software part, as it looks like a familiar turf, though knowing the various features can take some time.
Sequencer
The music sequencer is the main one, where you do all the recording, editing, and mixing of your music.
Then there are other useful software such as audio compressors, equalizers, etc. that are quite useful. Besides, you will need sounds too.
Soft Synths
You need a good collection of sounds such as drums, strings, orchestral sounds, etc. at your disposal that can be used to build your songs.
Software Processor
These were earlier available as hardware, but now the functions of compressors and equalizers are done using some fantastic software processors that are available these days.
Effects Processor
Effects processors vary from the straightforward distortion pedals to complex sound combinations that produce some cool sounds.
Hardware Components
This is what most musicians fear or are uncomfortable with, especially those who have not had much exposure to music technology.
Even if they have an idea of what goes in here, they are not sure of how to make it all work together. Here are the things that you will need:
Optional Extras / Accessories
Here are some other recording equipment that are more of “good-to-have”.
Control Surface
Piece of hardware that gives you hands-on control of the software sequencer (and the various plug-ins inside your DAW)! It is easier to do the editing work using this, rather than use the mouse of your computer.
External Mixing Board
Similar to the above, it is like the software mixer, and is easier to use the various controls using this equipment rather than use the mouse. You do get much smaller versions of mixing boards as well.
Other Equipment
Then there are other music recording equipment such as the Music Production Center (MPC) from Akai, drum machines, MIDI sound modules, and accessories such as cables & cords that you could need.
