How to Play the Keytar: Most musicians start playing the keytar because of the freedom the instrument offer while performing. Playing the keytar requires good understanding of a keyboard (notes, sounds and controls), and while the Keytar is shaped like a guitar you really don’t need to know how to play the guitar.
Learn to Play the Keytar
One of the questions that many wannabe players have is whether playing the Keytar is easier, compared to playing the keyboard or the guitar.
Well, if you already know how to play the keyboard, then its definitely easier. Besides, its definitely easier compared to playing a two-handed keyboard (like a piano).
If you’re a piano player, you may need to get used to the synth-action keys of a keytar (after playing on hammer-action keys for so long).
Because a Keytar comes with a few controls, it takes a little getting used to the controls, but beyond that, playing the Keytar is simple.
Getting used to the angle (at which it is played) may also take time (it might feel awkward in the beginning).
You can use the keytar for playing lead lines or as a rhythm instrument. Players commonly use it to play main riffs and solos. Advanced players who wish to cover a wide range of octaves use the octave switch button on the keytar.
Newer models of keytars have more features, so you should learn how to use them in order to take full advantage of the instrument. The keytar sounds best when played through an amp.
And don’t forget to dress the part, be in tune with the keytar’s ’80s look.
Best songs to play on the Keytar
A favorite song of many to play on the keytar is “Tom Sawyer” by Rush. The keyboard lick in the middle is iconic, and with a keytar, the audience can actually see the notes that you play. The musical figure itself works out nicely to be played with one hand, which is ideal for the keytar!
You may play any song with a nice melody and it should catch the audience’s attention. The great thing about this instrument is that it shows the audience where on the stage that melody is coming from, and in such a fun and surprising way.
