Electric Guitars for Kids are smaller in size and perfect for kids under the age of 11-12. Most of these come bundled with a practice amp.
Introduction
Most young beginners actually start learning guitar on a nylon-string classical guitar, so the demand for electric guitars is comparatively less. Besides, kids usually get interested in an electric guitar as they get older, in which case they go in for a full-sized electric guitar.
Having said that, there are several kids in the age group 5 to 11/12 years who are interested in playing the electric guitar. So if you’re looking for an electric guitar for your kid, make sure you get the right size for them.
You can choose either a half-size (1/2) guitar or a three-fourth (3/4) guitar.
If you’re looking for a better quality guitar from a reputable brand, go in for a 3/4 size guitar (these have more options and are available form reputed brands). 3/4th guitars are often called ‘Mini’,’ Traveler’, or ‘Short Scale’ sized guitar. These are perfect for tour buses, songwriting, and for young rockers and beginners.
Electric Guitars for Kids: Buying Guide
An electric guitar is used in most contemporary music, and the popularity of the rock guitarists only makes this instrument quite popular with young kids and teenagers.
Though an electric guitar needs an amplifier to produce the sound, the fact is that these have become quite affordable over the years, and you now get bundled packages for less than two hundred bucks.
Another advantage of electrics over the acoustic version is that the strings are lighter which makes them easier to play.
Accessories Required
For an electric guitar, you’ll need an amplifier and a cable (which usually comes bundled). A simple 10-watt mini amp is sufficient for practice.
In addition, a gig bag, strap, tuner, picks and guitar stand should be considered. A thin type pick is better for beginners; you might want to buy a few as its easy to lose them.
Replace the Strings
If you are buying the real one, get new sets of strings along with the guitar, just in case the strings break or if it’s hurting the fingers.
You can always take it to the nearest music store to replace the strings, but it makes sense to learn how to do it eventually.
Get the Kids Involved Early
Musical toys and instruments are great gifts to give to children. And the best time to give them one is when they are little, even before they start exploring television, computers and phones. Once the kids get addicted to all the sounds, lights and electronics, they are going to spend a lot of time with those instruments.
So get your child a kids guitar, arrange for some lessons, and in all probability, your child will develop a skill that he/she will enjoy throughout their whole lives.
Should your child learn on a Full Size Guitar?
Its quite possible that your child may outgrow a small-sized guitar, but I think that’s okay because your aim should be to make your child comfortable while learning to play the guitar.
A 6-7 year old will be more comfortable with a half-size guitar, and a 10-11 year old will be more comfortable with a three-fourth size guitar.
If you’re unsure, you can always go to a music store and get your child to play different sized guitars.
Options Available
For the very little ones, guitars that have buttons to produce the sound (toys) are more preferable.
For the grownups, you do get guitars that sound and feel like the real thing, but are smaller in size. They range from 22.0 inches to 24.0 inches whereas an adult size guitar starts from 25.0 inches.
