Most beginners guitar players are confused about what’s the difference between a Rhythm Guitar and Lead guitar. This is especially so when they intend to form a band, as they are not sure who should be playing what.
I once heard a guitar student say that the ‘lead guitarist couldn’t play rhythm because he didn’t have a rhythm guitar’. Well, that doesn’t sound correct. Because we are referring to the style of playing, rather than types of instruments here.
So basically, you cannot buy a ‘rhythym guitar or a ‘lead guitar’, it basically refers to how you play the notes.
Lead guitar vs Rhythm Guitar
A lead guitarist usually plays several melodic lines, whereas the rhythm guitarist provides the rhythm to the song (similar to the drummer).
If you were to compare it with singing, Lead guitar would be lead vocals, whereas Rhythm guitar would be the back up singers.

Learn to Play Both
Having said that, expert guitar players and guitar teachers difference feel that there’s much difference between playing lead guitar and rhythm guitar. And every guitarist should know how to play to the rhythm of the song.
Useful practice tip:
Practicing on your own, or jamming with another guitarist? Take turns at playing the lead and rhythm. When you are playing rhythm, listen to the other lead player and try to provide a solid base for him/her to improvise over; maintain a steady beat. When your turn comes to play lead, try to use some of the ideas of the other guitar player and blend it with your own to create your own licks.

Its important for budding guitar players to learn timing, spacing, phrasing, otherwise you won’t be able to play a solo that fits on the tempo of the song.
Without a complete knowledge, you’ll most likely become someone who just wants to show off. Have you seen the salesman at the guitar shop who never lets you play the guitar, and just goes on and on?
